In the days of the Great East Japan Earthquake came a request: Build us Noah’s Ark.

It was for the Shion Christian Church in Chigasaki.

The Ark?an ancient tale from the Book of Genesis?was a commission any architect would treasure.

And yet, it was no easy calling.

To construct Noah’s Ark literally would be to sink into the realm of amusement parks,

a spectacle stripped of soul.

What mattered was the meaning.

The Ark is a parable of readiness?

readiness for the cataclysms of our own age:

the warming of the planet, the spread of conflict,

the slow unravelling of the Earth’s delicate fabric.

In my journeys, I have seen how many churches

become like time machines,

sealed away from the rushing currents of the world.

Noah’s story holds another truth: diversity.

Every creature, whether deemed useful or not,

was gathered into the Ark in pairs.

While the measured time of Chronos

washed all things beneath the foam of the waves,

the Ark was guarded by Kairos,

and sailed beyond the boundaries of time.

I wished to catch the moment when the storm falls silent,

and shafts of light break through rents in the heavy cloud?

light from the heights, falling like blessing.

From raw timber, twenty thousand planks were hewn,

drawn together into the rounded flank of a hull,

a cradle for the teeming forms of life.

Beneath that light,

humanity searches for the faintest thread of hope.

And I wonder still?

did Kairos descend among us?
