The Aesthetics of Ornament ? Byzantine

2025/8/13

Byzantium is beautiful. I deliberately avoid calling it a “style,” for I do not wish to confine it within the narrow categorization invented by later historians. I visited the Church of Martorana in Palermo, which still retains traces of the Orthodox Church from the Eastern Roman Empire. Golden mosaic tiles shimmer, and a sacred light transcending time and space envelops all beings. Here, there is no rigid geometry of narrow proportions, no formalistic conventions of style?only architecture woven together as a device for conveying faith. Architects proclaim Hagia Sophia in Istanbul as the perfected form of the Byzantine style, and perhaps it once was. Yet the present-day Hagia Sophia, though mighty in scale, lacks something?it does not live. After the fall of Constantinople in 1456, it was converted into a mosque, and its mosaics were painted over. Today it stands as a museum. In truth, the aesthetics of Hagia Sophia were inherited by the Blue Mosque, the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, a century and a half after the city’s fall. The absence of living prayer may be one reason for its diminished power. Yet I suspect the simpler reason might be this?it has no mosaics.

Modernism denies ornament, as though it were an ethical transgression. Imagine a student adding ornament to a design project in a university studio?how would the professors respond? Almost certainly, the student would face criticism, though the reasoning behind it is often inarticulate. Meanwhile, complex and bizarre spatial compositions are praised. This is no different in the professional realm. Yet is not a complex and bizarre form itself a kind of ornament? In fact, such spaces can sometimes be more troublesome than any ornamentation.

Architectural ornament has developed as a means of expressing religion or symbolizing power, and at times as a display of wealth. Modern society often regards luxury as decadence. Frugality becomes a virtue, even a standard. The simplicity of Modernism lent itself well to expressing that virtue, just as Christian Dior’s modern fashion did. Yet, at the same time, people seek leisure in luxurious hotels converted from castles and mansions.

Modernism was born as a cry for freedom, yet at some point it became a norm that began to restrict the architect’s expression. Architects sought freedom in physical forces?the power of space, the texture of materials. Modernism certainly opened new doors, but is that enough? Why should an architect not paint a ceiling? Why should an architect not carve a sculpture? Everyone knows that the power of the Sistine Chapel lies in its ceiling paintings. Josef Olbrich’s Secession Building is beautiful. Frank Lloyd Wright’s ornament, for some reason, is accepted as an exception and counted among the Modernists. There is a contradiction.
