An Open Circle of Temperature

2025/8/8

Fuji Kindergarten has low airtightness. All its doors are sliding doors that can be completely opened. From the perspective of today’s SDGs-driven architectural standards, this appears regressive. Environmental regulations related to architecture under the SDGs framework are growing increasingly stringent. Even casually installing a window has become a challenge. Although it cannot be stated publicly, during an on-site jury visit for a certain award, one expert committee member remarked, “Fuji Kindergarten demonstrates no environmental consideration.” The critique was simple. First, the doors are virtually airtight. Second, there are no solar panels. Third, there is no rooftop greenery. But here lies a significant question: if a building satisfies those three points, is it truly environmentally friendly? These three measures presuppose the use of air conditioning technology. But Fuji Kindergarten, with its open windows and a way of living that follows the outdoor temperature as much as possible, may actually be far more environmentally conscious. No matter how efficient it may be, can a building that uses air conditioning really be considered more environmentally friendly than Fuji Kindergarten? Is an enclosed environment suitable for young children? Teaching the richness of nature may be the most essential requirement of the SDGs philosophy. The roof of the Katsura Imperial Villa has neither solar panels nor rooftop greenery?its airtightness is zero. Does that mean the Katsura Villa is environmentally harmful?

The root of this easy-to-make mistake lies in a fundamental misunderstanding of human existence. Humans are not like fruits bought at a supermarket. They are not meant to be stored with care in a refrigerator, isolated from their environment. People deliberately go to the beach where temperatures exceed 50 degrees Celsius, and in winter, they head to ski resorts in minus 20 degrees. Whether in heat or cold, humans are irrational beings who seek connection with the natural world. In this era of global warming, some argue that living without air conditioning is impossible. Certainly, 40 degrees is tough. But with a well-insulated roof and sufficient hydration, even the hottest summer can be surprisingly bearable. If air conditioning is used only on unavoidable hot nights, there’s no real danger. Driving a car without AC under the blazing sun is life-threatening. Our old 2CV’s interior surpasses 50 degrees in the summer?impossible to endure. But that’s because a car lacks the thick insulation of a building and has no eaves over its windows. Convertibles have no effective air conditioning?but those who drive them do so for the thrill of feeling both heat and cold.

Rather than solving the problem by closing off from the world, we endure by connecting with our environment. There’s no need to “solve” the problem?because being uncomfortable is natural. Summer is hot, and winter is cold. Humans possess the wisdom to enjoy seasonal temperature changes as part of their culture. Fuji Kindergarten has no rooftop greenery, but a large zelkova tree casts dancing shadows across the building. There are no solar panels, but skylights bring in soft natural light. Properly designed outdoor spaces are the ultimate luxury.
